Jurgen Klinsmann: US Coach Backtracks After Dissing His Team

It looks like someone is more optimistic about the USA World Cup team. Before heading into USA’s first match of the tournament, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann softened his stance on the team’s chances of winning the World Cup.

The stakes are high as the USA World Cup team prepares to face off against Ghana on June 16. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann, 49, did not think that USA could win when he spoke to reporters in December 2013. Sine then, however, he has changed his tune.

Jurgen Klinsmann Backtracks On Pessimistic Comments

“We come in with the same effort, the same drive, the same energy and ambition to do well. And we want to do really well,” Jurgen told reporters June 11. “That’s why we worked more than four weeks on our preparation, we timed it the right way to give the players the confidence they need to beat Ghana [on June 16]. This is step one, then comes Portugal and then comes Germany. And then we’ll see… Expectations in the United States are very high.”
However, this goes back on the comments he made in December 2013. He rubbed some Americans the wrong way when he told The New York Times that the USA  “cannot win” the World Cup.
That attitude is gone now and when he arrived in San Pablo, he spoke to the press about managing expectations as the team prepared to head into the tournament. This time, he seemed optimistic about the team’s chances of winning.
“I booked my flight after the final,” Jurgen joked with reporters.
Jurgen understands Americans have high hopes for their team and he promises the public that he will do everything he can to prepare the team for the tournament. Way to go coach!
